The Government of NCT of Delhi (GNCTD), through the Department of Health & Family Welfare, serves as the regulatory and monitoring authority under The Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. The Act empowers the State Appropriate Authority to ensure that all activities related to organ and tissue donation, including eye donation and transplantation, are carried out in a transparent, ethical, and efficient manner. In Delhi, the Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, functions as the State Appropriate Authority and supervises the work of licensed eye banks, hospitals, and other institutions involved in eye donation and corneal transplantation. This includes: Monitoring the functioning of eye banks to ensure proper collection, storage, and utilization of donated eyes. Enforcing strict adherence to medical and ethical standards in the transplantation process. Promoting public awareness about the importance of eye donation. Coordinating with hospitals, NGOs, and community organizations to increase pledges and donations. Through these efforts, GNCTD is committed to reducing avoidable blindness and ensuring that every donated eye reaches those in need. By strengthening awareness campaigns and medical infrastructure, the department aims to bridge the gap between demand and availability of corneas, giving the gift of sight to thousands each year.
